The ‘Institute for Leadership Development’is an integral part to Our Children’s developmental needs and is delivered through our After-school, Out-of-School and Summer Camp Enrichment Programs. The core of the Institute includes four components:
The Institute takes advantage of the after-school approach to develop interpersonal relationships based on core values (Respect, Dignity, Integrity and Excellence), enabling students to compete in the global economy.
Youth engage in workshops that introduce concepts including conflict resolution, overcoming victimization, life skills, health education, anti-violence and anti-prejudice.
Use hands-on activities such as pottery, painting, drama/acting, and music combined with cultural excursions to local exhibits, museums and attractions to help our children explore their own creative potential. Youth are encouraged to acknowledge their feelings within a safe and non-judgmental setting; discussing issues of self-esteem, bullying, and body image that otherwise may be expressed through drug use or anti-social behavior.
Youth engage in activities to discuss what food and exercise means to them and to their communities. We view how healthy living and nutrition intersects with cultural, economic, ecological, historic and health landscapes in their neighborhood.
We firmly believe everyone has something to give, and when a person chooses to voluntarily give of themselves, without promise of a reward – it is indeed the greatest gift. Everyone has talent, skill and or area of expertise that when shared will make an unforgettable mark. The Act of Sharing will have a positive impact on the individuals giving, the persons and or families receiving and ultimately on the Community-at-Large.
Now more than ever Families need quality After-School and Out-of-School care for their children. At CHILD we empower our children to recognize their potential and to realize their dream.
When you become a CHILD Sponsor you have direct impact in the life of a child, their family, and the community in which they live.

My student teacher mentor at PS 138 on Park Place and Nostrand Ave was Ms. Mosetta Moon. She heard the Crown Heights Service Center was looking for an after-school tutor as well as a high school equivalency instructor. I jumped at the opportunity to tutor the young people from the neighborhood at the main office of the Crown Heights Multiservice Center as it was called in the early 1970's. They were located on the southeast corner of Nostrand Ave and St John's Place in Crown Heights. (more…)
READ MORETo summarize nearly 6 years of involvement with Crown Heights Service Center can be considered impossible. I express extreme gratitude to this agency for being part of the village, the fundamental groups that has shaped me. I know that every child such as myself, who had walked and continues to walk through their doors will have a everlasting impact on their own lives. Let me explain through their 5 sections that this agency holds dear. (more…)
